Couples getting married in the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of S.F. are required to complete premarital counseling. At St. John’s, couples go through the Prepare Inventory. The couple first meets with one of the clergy for an introductory session. The couple is then signed up to take the online Prepare Inventory, after which they will have four to five sessions with Fr. Timothy.
Prepare/Enrich is a customized couple assessment completed online that identifies a couple’s strength and growth areas. It is one of the most widely used programs for premarital counseling and premarital education. Based on a couple’s assessment results, a trained facilitator provides 4-5 feedback sessions in which the facilitator helps the couple discuss and understand their results as they are taught proven relationship skills.
There are several goals of the Prepare/Enrich Program. In order to achieve these goals there are exercises designed to help couples improve their relationship skills. The program helps couples:
- Explore strength and growth areas
- Strengthen communication skills
- Identify and manage major stressors
- Resolve conflict using the Ten Step Model
- Develop a more balanced relationship
- Explore family of origin issues
- Discuss financial planning and budgeting
- Establish personal, couple and family goals
- Understand and appreciate personality differences
The cost of the inventory is $35 that is paid online by the couple. The Pre-Marital Preparation program is a service offered by Fr. Timothy who is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. The cost for the four sessions is $300.
Marriage Enrichment (Seminars & Retreats)
Every marriage needs to be nurtured in order for a couple to grow closer together and together grow closer to Christ. An enriching marriage doesn’t just happen on it’s own, rather it takes two people putting forth an intentional effort to learn more about the other, their self, and how to deepen their connection in healthy and meaningful ways.
Like Christianity, marriage is about the other. Just as we are called to love our neighbor as our self, so to are we to love our spouse as our self and to put our beloved one ahead of us. Today, living in a society that promotes “me first” puts our marriages at risk. Our Lord was very clear when speaking of love for one another saying, “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma” (Eph. 5:1-2). Marriage enrichment is something we take seriously at St. Johns and for this reason we offer an annual marriage seminar/retreat as well as various resources. Also available to couples is a Marriage Enrichment program that they can participate in with our priest. The cost of the inventory is $35 that is paid online by the couple. The Marriage Enrichment program is a service offered by
Fr. Timothy who is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. The cost for the four sessions is $300.
Reclaiming Family Dinner
Why Family Dinner Matters: Studies have shown that kids who eat with their families frequently are less likely to get depressed, consider suicide, or develop an eating disorder. They are also more likely to have better grades, delay sex, and not abuse drugs and alcohol. Reclaim your family time together by gathering around the table and giving thanks to God. Make a family plan to intentionally DISCONNECT from cell phones at the table. Experience the transforming power of engaging in face-to-face, heart-to-heart conversations with your family! “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up” (Deut. 6:4-7).

Mom’s & Tots
St. John the Baptist Moms & Tots group encourages mothers as they raise their children in the Orthodox faith. We offer a strong support system among mothers and children ages 0-5 by providing opportunities for fellowship, and spiritual growth. Once a month one mom offers to host a Moms & Tots play date either at her home or out in pubic, like a park or indoor play facility. The hosting mom will have snacks and refreshments, though others are welcome to bring additional refreshments to share. Moms have a great time socializing while the children play. We have chosen less structured play dates since most of us have full daily schedules. In addition to our social outings, the Moms & Tots group also has a weekly bible study led by our priest every Friday morning.
Seniors Ministry (Aging, Adult Children of the Elderly)
The senior ministry at St. John’s has been in existence since 1997. Our primary goal is to assist those who are not able to attend services on a regular basis by providing rides, visiting shut-in and provide regular fellowship through educational seminars and luncheons and special events.
The senior ministry also coordinates outings throughout the year to such destinations as: St. John the Baptist Monastery in Goldendale, WA, The Oregon Gardens, The Washington Oriental Gardens, and The Hood River Train Rides and Dinners. Nearly every Sunday the seniors have the opportunity for fellowship at a Seniors Coffee Hour table following the Divine Liturgy. We also participate in fundraising events to assist other church ministries when there is a need. We have also worked along side with our parochial school (Agia Sophia Academy) and our Sunday school to provide senior-student mentoring relationships to share life stories with Christian relevance for our children at St. Johns.
